Choosing a spouted matcha bowl
Find the matcha bowl that suits the way you prepare it, from a straight cup to a latte.
If you drink your matcha as a latte, the bowl has two jobs. It needs to give the whisk enough room to work, then help you transfer the drink into a glass. A small spout is a useful detail when that pour is part of your daily routine.
Whisk first, then pour
The Glaze six-piece matcha set brings a rounded spouted bowl together with a matching whisk holder. Its marbled finish runs across both pieces. Choose Mist Green, Indigo Blue, Blossom Pink, Moss Green or Warm Ivory; every colour includes the same tools.
The other four pieces are a bamboo whisk, a metal mesh sifter, a broad wooden spoon and a narrow curved bamboo scoop. The scoop lifts matcha powder, while the sifter belongs over the bowl before you add water. Use a scale if you want to measure the powder precisely.
For a latte, prepare the matcha with water separately before adding it to milk. Ippodo's matcha latte guide explains that method. The Glaze bowl's spout gives you a defined point to pour from when you move the whisked tea to your glass.
A bowl that suits your way of drinking
You do not need a spout to make matcha. If you prefer to drink straight from the bowl, a simple round rim may be all you need. The IKI six-piece set offers that shape, with plain and reactive finishes and the same core bowl, whisk, holder and sifter combination.
The difference between these sets is in the ceramic shape, the finishes and the spoon selection. Glaze has the pouring spout and a broad spoon. IKI has the straight bowl rim and a deeper bamboo measuring spoon. Both include a slim curved scoop. Choose by the cup you intend to make, then by the finish you want on your counter.
Make room for the whole kit
A whisk holder is easy to overlook in a photograph, but it gives the rinsed whisk a place to rest between uses. Keep the sifter and scoops close enough that preparing a bowl does not begin with searching a drawer.
After use, wash the pieces gently by hand. Rinse the whisk promptly and let the bamboo and wood dry fully in the open air. Avoid sudden temperature changes to the ceramic bowl and holder.
What you are buying
