The IKI Society guide
Your Glaze matcha set
Six pieces, a first bowl and a few good habits. Keep this guide for yourself, or share the page with someone receiving the set.

The six pieces
- Spouted ceramic matcha bowl
- Prepare and whisk your matcha here, then pour into a drinking glass.
- Ceramic whisk holder
- Rest the rinsed whisk on its holder to dry in the open air.
- Bamboo whisk
- Mix the sifted powder with water using quick, light strokes.
- Metal mesh sifter
- Sift your powder into the bowl before adding water.
- Wooden spoon
- Use the broader spoon to transfer powder. It is not a calibrated measure.
- Bamboo scoop
- Transfer a small amount of powder with the slim scoop. For a repeatable recipe, weigh the powder.
All five finishes contain these six pieces. Matcha powder, milk and a drinking glass are not included.
Your first bowl
Have matcha powder, water, a kettle and a scale ready. Follow the tea producer's instructions if they differ.
- Rinse the pieces before first use. Briefly warm the bowl and whisk with warm water, then empty and dry the bowl.
- Sift 2 g of matcha into the bowl.
- Add 60 ml of water at around 80°C.
- Whisk briskly back and forth with a light wrist, keeping the tips away from the bowl's base. Drink while freshly prepared.
This starting ratio follows Ippodo's basic matcha recipe.
Make a latte
Prepare the matcha with water in the bowl first. Use the spout to transfer it into a separate glass of milk. Add ice for an iced latte. Adjust milk and powder to taste, following the powder producer's recipe.
Keep milk out of the bamboo whisk: whisk the matcha with water, then combine it with milk in the drinking glass.
For measured quantities and a fuller method, read making a matcha latte at home or use our ratio calculator.
After your bowl
Rinse the whisk promptly with water and let it dry fully on the holder. Do not leave it damp in a closed container. Wash the other pieces gently by hand, then dry the wooden and bamboo pieces before putting them away. Follow any care instructions supplied with your set.
Replace a whisk with broken tips. Avoid sudden temperature changes to ceramic pieces.

Keep it useful
If the bowl is lumpy, sift before whisking. If the flavour is too strong, adjust the next bowl using your tea producer's guidance. Change one quantity at a time so you know what helped.
